In 1898, Spain sends a military squad to the town of Baler in the Philippines to protect one of the last colonies of the Spanish Empire. Captain Enrique de las Morenas and Lieutenant Cerezo lead the soldiers, who are determined to prevent the rebellious natives from reclaiming their ancient territories. However, the soldiers find themselves constantly being stalked by the rebels at night.
To seek refuge and defend themselves, the soldiers take shelter in the town's church, which is run by Fray Carmelo, Baler's priest. The church is transformed into a makeshift military fort, as the relentless heat and malaria begin to take a toll on the men.
Tragedy strikes when Captain de las Morenas succumbs to a disease called beriberi and dies. Lieutenant Cerezo steps up to lead the remaining soldiers, who face both physical and emotional challenges as they struggle to survive. With the rebels closing in and their morale plummeting, the soldiers must find the strength and courage to continue fighting.
