Based on Frank McCourt's bestselling memoir, Ängeln på sjunde trappsteget (1999) depicts the hardships faced by the McCourt family as they strive to overcome poverty in pre-war Limerick. The story begins with the McCourts living in Brooklyn, but after the tragic loss of one of Frankie's siblings, they reluctantly return to Ireland, only to be greeted by even more dire circumstances.

Frankie's father, a Northern Irishman, faces discrimination in his search for employment in the Republic, despite his previous service for the IRA. Even when he does manage to find work, his earnings are squandered on alcohol, exacerbating the family's struggles.

Throughout the film, the audience witnesses the family's tenacious spirit and their relentless pursuit of a better life. Despite the recurring setbacks and the overwhelming poverty that surrounds them, Frankie finds solace in his love for literature and aspires to become a writer.

Ängeln på sjunde trappsteget portrays the resilience of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable adversities. It offers a poignant and compelling narrative that sheds light on the harsh realities of poverty and discrimination, but also celebrates the power of hope and determination.

This critically acclaimed film, based on McCourt's poignant autobiography, provides a moving and thought-provoking portrayal of the McCourt family's struggle for survival and their unwavering pursuit of a brighter future.
