Details
In the movie Instinct (1999), Dr. Ethan Powell, a once-respected anthropologist, goes missing for two years while studying gorillas in Africa. When he resurfaces, he has committed a violent crime and is sent to a mental institution for evaluation. Dr. Theo Caulder, a psychiatrist, is tasked with understanding Powell's behavior and determining if he is fit to stand trial.
As Caulder delves deeper into Powell's past and psyche, he uncovers a complex and troubling narrative. Powell's time spent living among gorillas has had a profound impact on his beliefs and behaviors, leading to a clash with societal norms upon his return. As Caulder struggles to make sense of Powell's actions, he must confront his own biases and preconceptions about mental health and human nature.
Instinct is a thought-provoking exploration of identity, morality, and the boundaries between civilization and the natural world. Through powerful performances and a gripping narrative, the film raises questions about the true nature of humanity and the consequences of rejecting societal conventions.
