In the movie A Girl Like Her (2015), Jessica Burns, a high school student, reaches out to her best friend Brian to help her expose the relentless bullying she is enduring from Avery Keller, a popular and mean girl at South Brookdale High School. Jessica decides to film her day-to-day experiences of harassment, hoping that the evidence will shed light on the torment she endures.
As the documentary unfolds, viewers are given an inside look into the devastating effects of bullying on Jessica's mental well-being and her relationships. The film raises important questions about the role of bystanders, the power dynamics in high school, and the consequences of unchecked bullying.
Both Jessica and Avery are complex characters with their own struggles and motivations. Jessica's vulnerability and strength in the face of adversity make her a relatable and sympathetic protagonist. Meanwhile, Avery is shown as more than just a one-dimensional antagonist; the film delves into her insecurities and the pressures she faces to maintain her popularity.
A Girl Like Her is a thought-provoking film that highlights the emotional and psychological toll that bullying can have on individuals. It serves as a reminder of the importance of empathy, understanding, and creating a safe and inclusive environment for all students in schools.
