Set during the Civil War, the story follows Lieutenant John Dunbar, played by Costner, who is assigned to a remote outpost in the American West. The encounters with the Sioux people awaken Dunbar's curiosity and respect for their culture, prompting him to question his own purpose and the ideologies he has been brought up with. As he spends more time with them, Dunbar learns their language, traditions, and ways of life.
Through his relationships with the Sioux, particularly a woman named Stands With a Fist, played by Mary McDonnell, Dunbar finds acceptance, friendship, and love in this unfamiliar world.
