Detroit, the early 1960s. Curtis Taylor, Jr., a car salesman, breaks into the music business with big dreams. Dreamgirls (2006) is set in 1960s Detroit and follows the story of Curtis Taylor, Jr., a car salesman with big dreams of breaking into the music business. He discovers a talented trio of young women called the Dreamettes and convinces them to become backup singers for the popular R&B performer, James Thunder Early. Curtis goes on to establish his own record label and becomes a shrewd businessman, using his skills to propel the Dreamettes, now known as the Dreams, to stardom.

However, as the Dreams rise to fame, Curtis replaces the lead singer, Effie White, with the more visually appealing Deena Jones. This decision leads to tension within the group as Effie is demoted and eventually fired, leading her to a life of struggling poverty. Meanwhile, Deena and the Dreams achieve success and become household names.
