In Ravenous (1999), set in a remote military outpost in the 19th century, Captain John Boyd and his regiment are sent on a rescue mission that takes a sinister turn. When they are ambushed by a sadistic cannibal, Boyd is the lone survivor and is regarded as a hero. However, haunted by guilt and plagued with hallucinations, he is transferred to Fort Spencer, a desolate outpost in the Sierra Nevadas.

At Fort Spencer, Boyd encounters an eccentric group of misfits, including the enigmatic Colonel Hart, and they soon discover an even darker secret lurking within the mountains. As winter sets in, the cannibalistic threat becomes real and the group must band together to survive.
