The Yellow Birds (2017) is a gripping war drama that follows two young soldiers, Bartle and Murph, as they face the brutal realities of the Iraq war. At just 21, Bartle finds himself responsible for 18-year-old Murph, navigating the horrors of war under the command of the troubled Sergeant Sterling. The film unfolds as Bartle is haunted by a promise he made to Murph's mother before they were deployed.
As the soldiers witness the chaos and devastation around them, they struggle to maintain their sanity and cope with the emotional toll of their experiences. The film explores the bonds of friendship and the relentless pressure that war puts on young soldiers.
The Yellow Birds delves deep into the psychological effects of war on its protagonists, painting a realistic and thought-provoking portrait of the toll it takes on those who serve. The performances by the cast, including Alden Ehrenreich, Tye Sheridan, and Toni Collette, are exceptional, bringing a raw authenticity to their characters.
Directed by Alexandre Moors and based on the bestselling novel by Kevin Powers, The Yellow Birds received critical acclaim for its poignant storytelling and powerful performances. It serves as a reminder of the sacrifice and bravery of the men and women who serve in the armed forces, while shedding light on the often overlooked mental health struggles they face upon their return.
