Details

In Tom of Finland, viewers are transported to post-World War II Finland, where Touko Laaksonen, a war hero, returns home only to encounter a distressing reality. Despite his decorated past, Touko finds himself in a Helsinki rampant with persecution against homosexuals, with societal pressure encouraging men to enter false marriages and start families.

In order to find solace and freedom, Touko turns to his art. His drawings depict homoerotic scenes featuring muscular men, embracing their sexuality without inhibition. These powerful artworks, which he signs as 'Tom of Finland,' quickly become a symbol for a whole generation of men and ignite the flames of a gay revolution.

Throughout the film, Touko's struggle to reconcile his own desires with the societal expectations placed upon him unfolds. Supported by his sister Kaija and his partner Veli, Touko finds the strength to continue creating his provocative art and challenging the oppressive social norms of his time.

Tom of Finland is a thought-provoking and inspiring portrayal of an artist who used his talents to liberate and empower the LGBTQ+ community. It sheds light on a dark period in Finnish history and highlights the courage and resilience of individuals who dared to express their true selves. Ultimately, it is a testament to the power of art as a catalyst for social change.
