What Maisie Knew
Details
In the heart of New York City, the film What Maisie Knew presents a gripping tale of a young girl trapped in the turmoil of her parents' acrimonious custody battle. Maisie, played by Onata Aprile, becomes an unwitting pawn as her parents, Susanna (Julianne Moore) and Beale (Steve Coogan), continually battle for her custody.
The film adeptly captures the emotional fallout of divorce, as Maisie is constantly shuffled between her neglectful, self-absorbed parents. However, she finds unexpected solace in the nurturing care of her nanny, Margo (Joanna Vanderham), and her stepfather, Lincoln (Alexander Skarsgård).
What Maisie Knew explores the devastating impact on children when parents choose their own desires over their child's well-being. The film masterfully navigates the minefield of familial disintegration, highlighting the resilience and adaptability of children amidst such chaos.
Directed by Scott McGehee and David Siegel, the film draws from Henry James' classic novel of the same name but is set in contemporary times. With its realistic and poignant portrayal of a sensitive subject, What Maisie Knew offers a thought-provoking exploration of the consequences of parental neglect and the importance of stability and love in a child's life.
Emotionally charged, this film is a compelling and relevant story that showcases outstanding performances and resonates with audiences long after the credits roll. What Maisie Knew serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring effects of parental struggles on the innocent lives in their midst.
